The giant is awakened: LHC is gonna start working

Geneva - Only a few hours and the giant of the particle accelerators is gonna wake up: the first row of protons is gonna run through the 27 kilometers of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)'s ring on Thursday, the 10th of September.

Everything is going as planned and the catastrophic hypotesis of the last few days make us smile, while among the researchers of the Cern institute of Geneva the upcoming event becomes more and more exciting every hour.

''Some of us have been working for 20 years on this project and now we're full of hopes, there's a very good climate'', says physic Maria Curatolo, responsible of the Italian physics for Atlas, one of the four big experiments that will be conducted in the LHC. ''Injection tests started in august have been concluded and everything went well'', she says.

Now, finally, it's time to step to the next phase: ''after being injected in the accelerator, particle rows will circulate along the entire ring''. Initially the energy level will be low compared to the predicted one when fully functional: 450 Gev (which means 450 billions of elettronvolt), but in a short time it will be brought up to five TeV (5.000 billions of elettronvolt) and then up to 7 TeV.

''In these days the system is undergoing all verifications, that will continue until the last moment. Everything is under control and we know that the 10th of September world's attention will be on the accelerator''.

"It's already a great satisfaction to see that it's been realised, and it's cactually working, a machine that represents a new frontier of technology''. Everybody at Cern, is aware that the LHC is a complex device. ''That's why in the last years there have been some delays. But now, finally, everything's ready''.

Hope and trust are the most diffused emotions, which appear in the most evident way: ''We're all full of hope. We know that the scientists working on the machine have done a lot and now the situation reached its final point. We believe that now the phase we've been waiting for a long time has started, and we'll be able to gather all the data needed to explore a new physical universe"

EDIT: the experiment is gonna start at 9:00 CERN time (which means Italian time, GMT +1)...I'll definetly wake up in time!!! I don't want to lose this event....

NEW DELHI - A 16-year-old girl committed suicide, because she was afraid of the arrival of the end of the world thanks to the Big Bang experiment that's being done at Geneva.
The news comes from the Indian press agency PTI. Chhaya, who lived in the city of Sarangpur, in thei Rajgarh district of the central indian state of Madya Pradesh, became really interested on the CERN experiment in the last days, experiment in which take part lots of Indian researchers.

According to what her parents told to the police, Chhaya had been following the news about the experiment on tv and was heavily impressed by the fact that lots of people talked about the end of the world, enough to lose sleep and become really nervous. Yesterday evening the decision to kill herself, by eating lots of tablets of insect killer. The girl was immediately taken to the Indore hospital, where she died this morning.

That's bad.....that's the effect that media can sometimes have on people....

I hope WTC doesn't mean World Trade Center...but I'm afraid that it means just that....

Latest news about the project: today there was a Helium leak in the LHC cooling system, so the accelerator was stopped, and won't be reactivated until this problem ise fixed, which means at least two months (including the whole check procedure, that needs to be re-done)....

So, we'll have to wait a bit more before the project goes on...
