PlayStation 3 losses now over $1 billion But the ancient PlayStation 2 is still doing well October 26, 2007 12:47 PM Source:http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/

Quote"Almost a year ago, I commented: "Still, the expectation that Sony will lose $1 billion on the PS3 in the first year may turn out to be low." And as BusinessWeek has now pointed out, "Sony's gaming division has just lost $848 million -- double the figure from last year -- and first-half losses reached $1.1 billion."
In a statement, Sony said:
In the game segment, operating loss increased primarily due to the loss arising from strategic pricing of PS3 at points lower than its production cost and the increase in PS3-related inventory write-downs recorded during the current quarter compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
In other words, while it had planned to sell the PS3 at a loss, Sony had to reduce prices and sell at even more of a loss in order to shift consoles it had already made.
Gamasutra has rounded up the numbers for gaming division. It says:
In addition, specific hardware and software numbers were given for PS3, PS2, and PSP hardware compared to the previous year. Interestingly, Sony has changed its method of gathering these numbers "from production shipments to recorded sales", as from June 2007, for unspecified reasons possibly related to a surfeit of PS3 hardware in stores.
Nonetheless, the numbers given are as follows: PS2 worldwide hardware sales for the quarter at 3.28 million, down 0.13 million year on year; PSP worldwide hardware sales at 2.58 million, down 0.56 million; and PS3 sales at 1.31 million.
As for worldwide software sales, the PlayStation 2 saw total sales from all first and third-parties of 38.0 million units, down 9.2 million year-on-year (bearing in mind the difference in collection methods). The PSP had software sales of 12.6 million units, down 0.6 million, and the PlayStation 3 had sales of 10.3 million software units.
Seems to me the PS2 is still doing amazingly well for a seven year old machine."
Didn't see that coming! :suspect: I always thought PS3 was a better option despite its pricy tag and since it was mostly a one time investment, would be preffered by more people! Guess i was wrong!

XBox360 has been promoting the shelves with their $299 crap. The other reason being we currently don't have enough titles supporting the power of the PS3 (like you correctly said one time investment)

Exactly; when parents are looking for a console for their kids they come across the PS3 and Xbox and they think about it, "Hmmm..... Why go for a costly PS3 when i can go for an Xbox! They both do the same thing and Xbox will be more easier on my pockets too...." and so.... the Xbox is in the bag! I am not against Xbox; especially when they have made console gaming affordable for most people, but i hate to see Playstation be 'second choice'!

probably the reason why the acclaimed PS2 stands out would be that the PS3 is able to support graphical requirements of mos PC's but most games lost the charm and adventure that was once seen in the earlier era's.
and Microsoft has been aggressively promoting the xbox360 at $299

Very true!!
We have a huge following for titles like Halo on PC and the game stations. A peep into sales of Halo 1&2 would give you a very clear picture of how huge that market is. GTA 4, is very similar to the earlier versions including VC and SA, except for the rich graphics and special effects. Lots more to see. Another title to watch out for would be EA's Battlefield.

I hate consoles, They are very expencive and the game creators release the games for them at the first, that makes me hate consoles. i prefer PC, the keyboard you use are very good to have, using some buttons on a console is very hard and it will hurt in your fingers after been playing for a while.

Well i'm kinda attached to my PC! Not that i have anything aganist consoles, but ya consoles are too costly and they offer less features than a pc! I'd rather spend my money on PC upgrades than on a console! But between the Xbox and the PS i prefer the PS!

Moreover you cant chat, email, download ..etc on a console. Consoles are for people who don't know where to throw their cash. PC's rule
