Why do people always say he is a bad director .. indeed he isn't, the better known films he made are not so bad to be honest. What most people don't like on them: they leave thepath the game would give. But thats just because people wouldn't like it. Games are no 1 1/2 hour story, and you can't put that into that limited time..I've seen several films, and from a "not game" point of view they were not that bad, e.g. Max Payne.
The bigger problem: you won't get any "real good" director for making games movies. That just won't happen, and no, you can't always measure games films with exclusive ones like Final Fantasy, which was a fantastic, but animated film.
Take Max Payne again as example: it is a film noir like game story, which has its thrilling in PLAYING it, while watching it mostly will fail. Same with Far Cry or other games. But in pne point I am with you: GTA. I don't see much of a storyline which could be used for a film. The years it plays, the surrounding, the background stories are not really something what could generate thrill or amusement for people to watch it, far less than MP or FC would/had. So indeed, making a GTA movie won't be that good idea. Excluding IV, I could imagine some nice plot.
